Great Southern Golf Club is the oldest golf course in Mississippi originally designed by Donald Ross and renovated by Brian Curly. The course opened in 1908 in square greens with humped-backed and unexpected slopes. The course has withstand the Gulf Coast weather while revealing its age. When renovation became necessary for the course, Curly took pains in keeping Ross’ design while satisfying the USGA specification. Top stars such as Patty Berg, Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson have played in the semi-private golf course.
Great Southern Golf Club measures 6238 yards from the longest tees and has a USGA rating of 69.7 and a slope rating of 117. It features three set of tees for different skill levels. Most of the holes look easy but playing on it is a different story. For example, the 250-yard par-4 Hole 6 appears to be easy but the big oaks on both sides of the fairways will make the golfer to stop and think for the right strategy to win the hole. In addition to the oaks are the bunkers located in the left, front and behind and the elevated green that slopes sharply from left to right.
